(10 Nov 2020) Two new checkpoints linking Ukraine and the rebel-controlled Luhansk region have been launched on Tuesday, a few years after an agreement on it was reached at the peace talks in Minsk. Five checkpoints in Donbass, Eastern Ukraine, that were closed on 15 October due to lockdown following a surge in coronavirus cases have also re-opened. The new checkpoints are in Shchastya and Zolote, however Luhansk People's Republic (LNR) de-facto authorities could be seen not allowing some people to enter via the new Shchastya checkpoint. Previously, Luhansk had just one pedestrian checkpoint with Ukraine - the new checkpoints have been built to also process car traffic. The checkpoint in Shchastya is able to process 15,000 pedestrians and 5,000 cars per day, Nelya Dotsenko, deputy head of Luhansk border guard said. Mychailo, a local resident, said as he attempted to pass through the new checkpoint in Shchastya, "Only 10 or 15 minutes to get there. It's so comfortable. And people will feel some relief. Huge queues won`t appear any more." "In Stanytsia Luhanska people even die in waiting queues in hot or cold weather," he added. However LNR de-facto authorities didn`t let people cross the line from Shchastya to the Zolote side. Mychailo and other people wishing to cross into the rebel-controlled Luhansk region reported being turned away.
