In this week's episode, we complete the "Subtractive Basics" component of the series with a discussion of filter modulation. Despite the central position that filters hold in subtractive synthesis, we haven't really given them much time. This is because filtering combines elements that can be seen in isolation in other components of our signal chain, so beginning with the other modules establishes a strong foundation for a thorough understanding of filters. Here, we use amplitude modulation to conceptualize the effects of filter modulation. Understanding filter mod as frequency-variable amp mod can help us better conceptualize its effects, particularly once our modulators enter audio rates.
