Turkish (Türkçe) is the most widely spoken language of the Turkic family, primarily spoken in Turkey and Cyprus, with significant communities in the Balkans, Western Europe, and the Caucasus. It belongs to the Oghuz branch of the Turkic language family and has around 80 million native speakers. Turkish evolved from Ottoman Turkish, which in turn was influenced by Arabic and Persian, but underwent major linguistic reforms in the 20th century to simplify vocabulary and grammar. It uses a Latin-based alphabet, introduced in 1928, and is known for its vowel harmony and agglutinative structure, where suffixes modify meaning and grammatical function. Turkish is the official language of Turkey and one of the official languages of Cyprus, playing a key role in regional politics, trade, and culture. Turkmen is a Turkic language of the Oghuz branch, primarily spoken in Turkmenistan, where it is the official language, as well as in parts of Iran, Afghanistan, and other Central Asian countries. It has around 7-8 million speakers and is closely related to Turkish and Azerbaijani, sharing many grammatical and lexical similarities. Turkmen has historically been written in Arabic script, later transitioning to Latin and then Cyrillic during the Soviet era, before officially adopting a Latin-based script again in the 1990s. The language maintains strong vowel harmony and agglutinative structure, characteristic of Turkic languages, while also showing influences from Persian, Arabic, and Russian due to historical and cultural interactions. Despite modern influences, Turkmen retains many archaic features, making it a key link in the Oghuz Turkic linguistic continuum.
