Happy Halloween! I’ve been meaning to do something like this for Halloween for some time now and finally got around to it. As much as I like collecting masks, I dislike wearing them…especially when recording videos. Being able to see and breathe actually make that experience much more enjoyable. Lynn and I took a second year off from having our Halloween party and are starting our vacation today. Normally, we’d take off the week following the party in order to put the yard, garage, and house back together, but, as we did last year, we’re taking off the week prior to Halloween in order to enjoy some seasonal stuff for ourselves. Tonight is a Howard Jones show. Tomorrow is the Headless Horseman Hayride with friends and so on. The idea for covering this song came through a conversation I had, years ago, with YouTube friend Tara Smyth (Mosriteluv). By the way, her YouTube name comes from her admiration for original B-52’s guitarist, Ricky Wilson, who was known to play a Mosrite. RIP Ricky Wilson and thanks for the inspiration Tara. George Romero’s “Dawn of the Dead” is on my short list of favorite horror movies…definitely in the top 3. I’ll never forget seeing it for the first time in a theatre…the “Wooley’s gone ape-shit!” headshot in the first 10 minutes of the movie! OMG! Incredible special effects work, especially considering the time (1978) and the budget ($500,000). I’m not the type of person who re-watches movies but I’ve lost count on the number of times I’ve seen DotD. The many midnight movies, the VHS tape rentals…and I even got the “Theatrical Cut” Blu-ray when it came out in 2007. And, while I’m not a big celebrity chaser, I did once have my picture taken with Tom Savini at Chiller Convention a few years back…couldn’t pass that up. A very important (and often overlooked) feature of the film is its soundtrack which was furnished by Italian prog-rock band and frequent Dario Argento collaborators, Goblin. Their music just “works” in this film. In my early 20’s, I may have been spotted in a few old-school record stores in NYC searching for this soundtrack to no avail. I’m really shocked there wasn’t a bigger demand for it, haha. I remember being overjoyed when I finally found a bootleg cassette at my first Fangoria convention. What I did with it after that is my own business. The song is "La Caccia" by Goblin off of the “Dawn of the Dead” soundtrack (released as Zombi in Europe) and features Fabio Pignatelli on bass. Fabio was also know to play a Rickenbacker at times. The mask I’m wearing is one of the few wearable masks that I own. It is a DeathStudios version of the iconic Verne Langdon mask, “The Zombie”. I believe DeathStudios named it “Shock” when they offered it. I selected this mask because, a few weeks ago, it was the mask chosen by a Facebook friend with mad photoshop skills and a great sense of humor who made the pic I used in the “featured” photo…hope you can see it alright. It’s pretty funny. I’m playing the Rickenbacker 4000 (formerly a 4003) with a ClassicAmplification replacement pick-up and replacement pick-guard by PickGuardian. And I’m using the GarageBand Phase-Shifter effect which is my favorite effect to use on the bass. I find that it is intense enough, so there is no mistaking that the instrument is being effected, yet it still lets the sound of the bass come through, in my opinion.
