2018 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Religion November 18 Denver, Colorado Much work has been done—and done at the AAR--on the rise of US populism since the 2016 presidential campaign. This panel looks at the rich work done on populism outside the US and the role of religion in it—from theological tenets to the religio-political history of the country involved. Presenters discuss western and eastern continental Europe, South Africa, and the UK. Populisms in various locations may well share a “family resemblance” in key characteristics. But for populist solutions to be persuasive to significant numbers of people--to “feel right”—they must be understandable and most often draw from the specific countries’ narratives, symbologies, and worldviews. After a look at populism’s commonalities, this panel explores how they are worked through local historico-cultural materièl—how, under economic and sense-of-place duress, populism selects from that materièl to pose a binary worldview of a moralized, essentialist “us” and a corrupted “them.” Marcia Pally, New York University, presiding Papers and Panelists: "Neo-Nationalism and Populism in Western Europe" Torsten Meireis, Humboldt University “A Political Theology of Populism" Luke Bretherton, Duke University "The Radical Right in Post-1989 Eastern Europe: Between Fascism and Religious Ultra-Nationalism, between Parties and Movements" Michael Minkenberg, European University, Viadrina "State Theology and Political Populism?
