What Is An SSD & Do You Need One?!?

This video goes over exactly what an SSD is and whether or not you need one when you are building a PC. I go over if you should use an SSD for gaming as well telling you the benefits that an SSD will give you if you do decide to add one into your computer. Overall, this is an in-depth look at SSDs, what they do, and when you should use them! I also talk about the benefits of gaming with an SSD, basically making your games open up faster, and I lastly, I go over whether or not you should spend money on an SSD. So first off let's talk about what exactly an SSD is. Well, SSD stands for solid state drive which basically means that instead of storing data on a spinning disc with moving parts like a traditional hard drive, it uses NAND flash memory chips that don't move and are just placed onto a PCB. These chips are relatively stable and will last for years. A very basic version of an SSD is a USB flash drive. USB drives are using flash memory chips instead of a moving hard disk to store data. Of course, SSDs are much, much bigger and more sophisticated, but the general concept is similar. An SSD has absolutely no moving parts what a hard drive has a rotating disk and moving arm. So, now you know what an SSD is, but do you need one for your PC. Well, as with a lot of PC parts, that depends. SSD can make a PC much, much quicker with Windows booting three to four times faster when it is booting off of an SSD versus a regular old hard drive. This speed increase will transfer over to other programs as well like Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, and even games. With that being said, there are downsides to SSDs too. For example, at the time this video is being made, a 1TB HDD will cost you around $45 from Western Digital. However, a 1TB SSD from Samsung, who makes VERY affordable SSDs, will cost you around $300. That's right a six and half times increase for the same amount of storage. Because of this, it is really cost effective to store EVERYTHING on an SSD. Thus, most people will spend around $100 for a nice 240GB SSD that will hold your operating system and programs, and 1TB HDD to store everything else like videos and photos where you won't see much of an increase from using an SSD. With that being said, no you don't NEED an SSD, but they can really speed things up, and if you the PC you are building is over $1,000, you should be able to include one without any issues. So there you have it! That is what an SSD is and whether or not you need one. What do you think? Should you buy an SSD for a PC? Let me know in the comment section below.
