If you have spent time visiting a parent with dementia in Memory Care(Hospitals, Skilled Nursing Facilities, Assisted living), it can be excruciating to keep a conversation going. When your parent has dementia and is in the hospital, emotions and confusion are at an all-time high, and it is our job to keep calm and carry on. The mistake I make a lot is that I ask too many questions! I will often ask my mom what she had for lunch? or what's going on this week? Obviously, these are not great questions for someone who has nearly no short-term recall, but I make this mistake. Use Pictures to have Conversations I have found that a stack of old pictures is a great way to keep my mom's focus and have an effortless conversation. It takes the pressure off her or me to fill the "dead air" with an ineffective question. I have found the older the photo, the better her recall is. She can identify herself as a little girl better than she can when looking at a picture of her at 60. I also learned (the hard way) never to try to teach her who the people are in the photos. Don't ask who is this? Do you remember this person? These are potentially anxiety starters. I will state something like, "This was you when we went camping in Oregon." "Look how old you were in this picture; you were so cute." My mom and I have really bonded over these old pictures, and I know this will be something that I will never forget about my mom. Having conversations in Memory Care can be fun for your loved ones and yourself using old pictures.
