What is the best hitch mounted platform (or tray) bike rack for your SUV? Quality and security play a major factor when it comes to price and for a bike rack that you can install yourself, easily load 2 mountain bikes, and use an integrated security system, you might want to check out the Yakima HoldUp hitch bike rack. This bike rack can also be expanded to hold 4 bikes! 0:00 WhyBuy intro and montage 0:41 Yakima HoldUp Buying story 1:41 Yakima HoldUp Key features 3:10 Yakima HoldUp Rack Extension 5:00 Yakima HoldUp Loading a bike on 6:04 Yakima HoldUp Built in Security Lock 7:47 SUV tent 7:59 Favorite thing Buy from Jenson USA: https://go.whybuyglb.com/BaOT0o0H WhyBuy is supported by its audience. We have friends who live in the rocky mountains so we had big plans to bike as much as we could. Because we have an SUV and live in the city, we also had to figure out how we were going to transport them to the mountains. What are the different types of hitch racks you can buy? 1. Hanging bike racks Hanging racks are a bit cheaper and you attach your bike by hanging its frame on the rack. These racks only works for bikes that have this type of frame (hard tails/road bikes) with a top bar to hang your bike on. From my understanding, dual suspension bikes or carbon fiber bikes are really tough, impossible, or not recommended to be attached to this type of rack. 2. Platform (Tray) bike racks Contactless racks (also known as Platform or Tray racks), like this rack, carry your bike not by hanging, but by securing a locking arm on the wheel of your bike. So there is no actual contact with the frame of your bike. I like this even just for our hardtail mountain bikes as I could totally see things like paint rubbing from hanging your bike. What helped me decide on the Yakima HoldUp 1. How easy is it to load a mountain bike on the rack It literally takes 10 seconds to load your bike up. Hanging bike racks are a bit more cumbersome when loading and unloading the bike; you need to balance the bike and securing with straps takes more time. So for us, the price to jump to a contactless frame was not too steep and we decided that "hey if we ever upgrade our bikes, it's probably best not to have to buy a new rack then too." 2. Security locks included We were between the Thule comparative and the Yakima. Both looked really good, both could extend to 4 bikes (Yakima's extension is a little cheaper), but I believe at the time the Yakima had the security locks included and the Thule's were an extra $50, so we went with the Yakima. 3. Value for price This was comparable price to most other similar hitch bike racks I looked at, but this came with the security locks, ready for extension, and, of course, a built in bottle opener, so this was a no brainer for me. Highlighted key features Rack Type: Hitch rack – attaches to your vehicle by hitch Hitch size mount: It will work with either the 1-1/4" or 2" hitch, you can choose when you order. I chose the 2" hitch as if I ever want to tow anything bigger, like a small trailer, you're likely going to want a 2" hitch for that. Ease of use: Super quick and easy to use compared to a cheaper hanging rack Contactless rack: Zero contact with the bike frame, this rack locks on your tires. This is important for bikes like Carbon Road frames as well as bikes with disc brakes and even full suspension bikes Size capacity: The Holdup rack can hold bike with tires anywhere from 20" to 29" wheels, this is a wide range of bike sizes Our tires are 2 inches or just over 2 inches, so pretty wide. The store said it can handle up to 2.5", but is not made for fat tires (3"+) Rear wheel straps included on the Yakima. At the time I purchased this, the other racks did not have the rear wheel straps. Check for this when you buy yours, it is a simple feature but a nice thing to have. The Yakima Holdup specifically comes with fully integrated security locks. This rack can extend to 4 bikes (with the purchase of the extension), the add on is about $200-$300 which is nice as you're not spending as much as you would on a new rack to have a 4 bike capacity (which would be much more expensive; probably $600-$800) Read the full review here: https://whybuyglb.com/project/140/why...
