British soldiers called it the worst weapon they had ever been issued. The recoil could crack a collarbone. Reloading required lying on your back and pushing a massive spring with both feet. It looked like scrap metal welded together in a garage. This was the PIAT — the Projector, Infantry, Anti-Tank. And despite being universally despised by the men who carried it, the PIAT compiled one of the most remarkable combat records of any infantry weapon in the Second World War. It destroyed Tigers. It knocked out Panthers. It blew apart bunkers. Three separate soldiers earned the Victoria Cross — Britain's highest military honour — while using the PIAT against enemy armour. More than almost any other individual weapon in the war. The weapon everyone hated turned out to be the weapon that saved lives when nothing else could.
