I.M. Lee Konitz (1927-2020) Last week alto saxophonist Lee Konitz died at the age of 92.In the Vrije Geluiden/Reiziger in Muziek / archive we found this special recording of March 11, 2001. The Blues in A flat/ Lee Konitz - saxophone , Misha Mengelberg - piano, Michael Moore - clarinet, Joey Baron - drums, Greg Cohen - double bass. Konitz was in Amsterdam on a short tour with pianist Misha Mengelberg and a solid rhythm section, Joey Baron on drums and Greg Cohen on bass. Lee Konitz and Misha Mengelberg had once played together in the Amsterdam jazz club Sheherazade in the 1950s. Lee Konitz played with the greats from Lenny Tristano, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Zoot Sims to Elvin Jones. Baron and Cohen were often featured in the experimental music scene of saxophonist John Zorn. Misha Mengelberg felt so comfortable with these musicians. But had he invited them himself? Misha: “It was an initiative of John Zorn, a very nice saxophonist from New York. He had heard some old pieces from me. And even found the lead sheets, somewhere. He liked the pieces so much. And he asked me if I already recorded them. No, I said. That must be done, he said. Then come to New and I will fix a fun rhythm section. I arrived in NY on a cold February morning and the club was already waiting for me there.I played with that section for one hour and it went well.
