[Oncoinfo – Istantanee di Oncologia: seguici su http://oncoinfo.it] Imposter syndrome is a psychological problem that causes high-level professionals to doubt their achievements and fear being exposed as impostors. We interviewed Enes Erul (researcher at Ankara University) who focused on how this phenomenon contributes to burnout among medical oncologists who experience it in almost 30 percent of cases. If left unchecked, imposter syndrome can cause anxiety, depression and unfinished projects, also affecting the quality of patient care. The research findings were presented at the recent Barcelona meeting of the ESMO Resilience Task Force. One of the most paradoxical things about imposter syndrome is that there is no level of accomplishment that can break the vicious cycle it triggers. The brief feeling of success or triumph that the oncologist experiences upon completion of a task then fails to be internalized. And when one finds oneself at the next task, one feels the same burning inadequacy. In particular, Erul's findings demonstrate significant correlations between imposter syndrome and increased emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced sense of personal accomplishment, thus underscoring the profound mental health challenges one faces in the demanding field of oncology. In the interview, Erul discusses the risk factors that make some professionals more susceptible to this condition, e.g., young age, female gender, and delves into practical strategies to overcome it. These strategies include developing strong mentorship programs, engaging in staff training by promoting positivity and resilience, and organizational policies that promote work-life balance. To learn more about the syndrome, the research team has initiated a global survey on burnout and imposter syndrome in which you can participate at this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1KQzM...
