Day 2: Meditation: Mastering the Mind - Talks on Bhagavad Gita Chapter 6 by Swami Aparajitananda ji Day 2 Talk Summary: Elaborating further on Karma yoga, we should do the seva as that which pleases God. This gives purity of mind. The purpose of action is to purify the mind. This is how Karma Yogi functions in the world. Karmi works for material results. A karma yogi’s mind is peaceful while performing action and after getting results. Doing that which the Lord likes, regardless of whether we like it or not, gives peace. This is surrender. Spiritual life is hard and is a struggle; it is unavoidable. Lift yourself by yourself. You are your own friend and enemy. Noone else is to be blamed. Lift yourself by doing what is right. Intellect tells us right from wrong and makes decisions accordingly. The mind makes decisions based on likes and dislikes. Bhagavan says we should listen to the intellect, and studying the scriptures strengthens the intellect. When you listen to intellect, it becomes stronger, and the mind simply obeys it, and then the mind becomes your best friend. Listening to the mind’s likes and dislikes and giving in to it, we strengthen the mind, and then the mind becomes our enemy. Empowering the intellect purifies the mind. Puncturing the ego makes the mind pure. An impure mind pampers the ego. 5-point techniques to lift yourself: Observe, detachment, eliminate and strengthen, give the mind sattvic samskaras, replace the negative thoughts with positive ones. Negative traits must not be allowed to flourish in our bosom. This makes the mind beautiful by enjoying uninterrupted peace. A beautiful mind leads to a beautiful world around you. It is the mind that comes with you after death and the peace of the mind continues as well. Pure mind is peaceful (Yoga= equanimity of mind) even when surrounded by ups and downs of life. Yoga empowers the mind by preventing the shocks of the world from reaching us. Such a quiet mind experiences the Lord! What is real knowledge? There are 6 topics to be known. One who understands this knows all. 1. Jiva vichara= who am I? 2. Jagat vichara= what is this world? 3. Ishwara vichara= who is God? 4. Bandha vichara= what is bondage? 5. Moksha vichara= what is liberation? 6. Sadhana vichara= how to liberate myself? A person who knows and experiences this is one who experiences that changeless substratum or Paramatma. He is samabuddhi, same feeling towards all and everyone, as he sees the essence in them.
