The Kidney Project: Building an Implantable Bioartificial Kidney

Led by Shuvo Roy, PhD, at the University of California, San Francisco, The Kidney Project is developing a surgically implantable bioartificial kidney designed to provide continuous renal replacement without external pumps, power sources, or immunosuppression. The device integrates a silicon nanotechnology–based hemofilter with a tissue-engineered renal tubule cell bioreactor. It builds on the foundation of the extracorporeal Renal Assist Device (RAD), which has demonstrated safety and the ability to mimic many of the functions of a healthy human kidney. We spoke with Dr. Roy about the challenges that remain in bringing a bioartificial kidney into clinical practice and how its success could transform kidney care.
