Bouazizi Echoed the Oppression In the small Tunisian town of Sidi Bouzid, Mohammed Bouazizi, a vegetable vendor, set himself on fire, after being humiliated by the police on December 17. His suicide act is said to be the instigator of uprisings across the Arab region in the past six months, including the overthrow of the decades-long leaders of Egypt and Tunisia. Mr. Bouazizi's reasons echoed the oppression the citizens of Yemen, Syria, and Libya and other countries, have been experiencing. En Masse, protesters demand the end of political corruption, economic hardship, and social deterioration. A number of Tunisia citizens remain persistent and optimistic, while others claim that it takes far more to witness physical change. Despite the existence of interim authorities, many opposition parties are requesting earlier poll, as they fear the government would take back promises of true reform. Elections in Tunisia were set for July 24 but have been postponed until October. Speakers: 2 residents of Sidi Bouzid By Noora Faraj Al Arabiya with Agencies
