Residents of Mdantsane, outside East London in the Eastern Cape, have taken matters into their own hands, occupying land near Claymond Farm and dividing plots among themselves to transform the area into a peri-urban settlement. The community claims they have repeatedly appealed to the Buffalo City Metro for more land and the development of RDP houses, but their requests have gone unanswered. Meanwhile, the Metro says anyone who occupies the land illegally will face the full might of the law.
