Dr Ruth Pfau, Amazing Facts About Her Life Savior of Humanity in Pakistan She was born in 1929 in Germany and lived through the horrors of the World War II. She left her native country Germany and stopped in Karachi on her way to India on 8th March 1960. She was being sent to a Mission Station in India by her Congregation but due to some visa problems she broke journey in Karachi and here she was introduced to the leprosy work. On her first visit to the Leprosy patient’s colony at McLeod Road (now I. I. Chandigarh Road, Karachi, Pakistan) she got so depressed with the situation that she resolved on the spot to join the group and help the affected Leprosy patients A journey which started 50 years back. Dr. Ruth came to Pakistan and devoted her whole life for the parents of Leprosy. She said; “My patients, become my strength”. In initial stage, she did efforts to stop it. Then she along with her team continued her efforts to make Pakistan a Leprosy Free Country. The nun founded the Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre in Karachi in 1962 and later set up its branches in all provinces of Pakistan, including Gilgit-Baltistan, and treated over 50,000 families. Dr Ruth, a beautiful lady, an innocent soul, an energetic worker, a blessed doctor...She sacrificed her whole life for eradicating Leprosy ( کوڑھ ، جذام ) in Pakistan. Due to her tireless efforts, the World Health Organisation in 1996 declared Pakistan one of the first countries in Asia to be free of leprosy. Not all of us can prevent a war; but most of us can help ease sufferings—of the body and the soul. — Ruth Pfau Across generations and across borders, Dr Ruth Pfau remains a symbol of selflessness and devotion to leprosy patients. To celebrate her services to some of the most ostracized segments of society, the German consulate awarded Dr Pfau with the Stauffer Medal in gold in 2015, its highest order of merit for service to the state. (December, 2015) She had been awarded many awards and medals in Pakistan 1969: Sitara i Quaid i Azam 1979: Hilal-e-Imtiaz 1989: Hilal-i-Pakistan She also known as Pakistan’s ‘Mother Teresa’ for dedicating her life to eradicate leprosy in the country. Nobody can payback the reward of her savior hands... can never, Dr Ruth you made Pakistan proud. I always feel, my patients are my children. I will be answerable if I could not give them attention like a mother. She died in Karachi on August 10 at the age of 87. A state funeral has been held in Pakistan for a German doctor and nun who devoted her life to battling leprosy. She said; If I would get rebirth, I would like to come again Pakistan. You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.
