Donald Becker Beowulf Project, and far more Donald Becker was a major contributor in the early years of Linux, notably having a major influence on the networking subsystem including writing essentially every network device driver through the first decade of its existence. But that was just a supporting effort to his ‘day job’ of high performance computing. His work on multiple open source projects intertwined with building prototype Linux clusters in the early 1990s. In 1994 he created the NASA Beowulf Project to develop, demonstrate and build a community around using Linux and networked commodity computers to cost-effectively solve problems that previously were the exclusive domain of purpose-designed supercomputers. Today that approach of networked independent system is the industry standard, and Linux is the dominant OS. Hear a slice of how that happened from the perspective of someone not just in the room, but pressing the keys to make it happen.
