Born in Chicago, IL in 1913, Margaret Bonds was a composer, pianist, and teacher. Her music ranges from classical to popular, and she has often incorporated jazz influences into her work. Bonds made history when she became the first African American to perform as a soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1933. Her life has been punctuated by close friendships with such notable individuals as Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes, and renowned composer Florence Price.
