I wouldn't normally ride my MTB on a dirt road but this area is special in a few different ways. The road is NOT an easy ride as it's a constant climb for the first seven miles - it goes over undulating terrain and thru washes with long sections of thick gravel which is not very easy to get thru. You'll pass an old vertical mine shaft. Then you will descend for three miles into a caldera and lava dome area to get to the old windmill, which is literally in the middle of nowhere. If you're lucky you may catch a glimpse of antelope and/or wild burro along with various other wildlife such as hawks, eagles, lizards and insects (in this case millions of grasshoppers following a super bloom). It's a very peaceful and geologically interesting area - this area is a no-fly zone so won't even hear an airplane. Be prepared for at least a 24-25 mile long ride with about 1,800-1,900 feet of elevation gain if you decide to check this out.
