►For a decade and a half, the S63 V8 engine has been BMW's engine of choice for its larger performance models. Powering all sorts of M cars, from the F10 M5 to the X6 M and M8, the twin-turbocharged powerhouse produces about 550hp in its most tame form and has a whole lot of room to go with the right aftermarket upgrades. With good maintenance, they've also shown to be plenty reliable, with owners reporting minimal costs over standard maintenance beyond 150,000 miles. However, that's not to say they're perfect. The S63 has proven to be more reliable than its predecessors, but a handful of areas still require careful monitoring and critical preventative maintenance. In addition, the S63 uses a hot-vee turbocharger arrangement, which will add some complexity to maintenance, so it's best to know what you're in for before acquiring your dream car or next commuter. If ignored, the lack of maintenance will bite in costly ways, but proper maintenance will go a long way, ensuring you have thousands of trouble-free miles ahead. In this video, FCP Euro's BMW Expert, Gareth Foley, dives into the BMW S63 engine and shares everything you need to know about maintaining one of BMW's best. 00:00 - Intro - 00:33 - What is this engine? 01:55 - Similarities and Differences Between S63 and N63 02:22 - Top of the Block 02:55 - Turbo Oil Line Return Housing 03:38 - Back of the Block - Weep Hole 04:58 - Coolant Jacket Cover 07:00 - Front Timing Cover 07:40 - Strengthen the Engine - Bottom End 08:23 - Oil Squirters 08:50 - Why is this Engine Apart? 09:16 - Cylinder Wall Inspection 12:39 - Downpipe Support Bracket 12:57 - Closed Deck or Not? 13:57 - Oil Pan 16:16 - Oil Pump Chain.
