This recording was made the Komae City Fire Brigade's New Year's Event (Dezome Shiki), held as part of the 11th Komae New Year Festival on January 11, 2026, in Komae City, Tokyo. Recorded using two Sony ECM-778 shotgun microphones and a SOUND DEVICES MixPre-10 II. Dezome Shiki is a traditional Japanese fire brigade event held in early January, marking the start of the work year. It features firefighting drills like simultaneous water discharge and evacuation rescue, demonstrations of traditional skills such as ladder climbing and firefighting songs, and parades of fire brigades and fire trucks in various locations. Hashigo-nori—Traditional firefighting ladder performance—is said to have originated with the Tobi craftsmen, who were central to the fire brigades during the Edo period, as a preparatory exercise and training before work. Today, it is performed during Dezome Shiki as a competition showcasing bravery and skill. Kiyari-uta—Traditional work song sung by Japanese loggers to coordinate heavy lifting—was passed down as a work song among town firemen and is now designated as an Intangible Cultural Property of Tokyo. Strong winds struck Tokyo that day, with maximum gusts exceeding 25 meters per second in some areas. Consequently, the scheduled Dondo-yaki bonfire was unfortunately canceled. To reduce wind noise, recordings were made using a Rycote Hi-Wind Cover plus a Windjammer. All files are 24 bit 48 kHz stereo and are not noise reduction, filter, compressor, or limiter.
