Born in Bhuvanagiri (now in Telangana) to a middle-class family, she was the daughter of a school teacher, Sarojini Devi, and had a younger brother named Praneet Chandra (also known as Krishna Chandra). Her father passed away when she was young, prompting her to enter the film industry at the age of 17 to support her family financially. Educated at schools in Bhuvanagiri, Miryalaguda, and Hyderabad, including St. Ann's High School in Tarnaka, she completed her intermediate education at Gouthami Residential Academy in S.R. Nagar and graduated with a Bachelor of Hotel Management from JB Institute in Banjara Hills. Pratyusha's entry into the spotlight came through her participation in the Television Star 2000 contest, where she was crowned "Ms. Lovely Smile," opening doors to the film world. She debuted in Telugu cinema with the 2000 film Rayudu*, where she played the daughter of veteran actor Mohan Babu. This role marked the beginning of a short but impactful career, spanning about 12 films across Telugu, Tamil, and planned Kannada projects. Her notable Telugu films include *Sri Ramulayya (2001), Samudram (1999) alongside Mammootty and Indraja, Snehamante Idera (2001) with Jagapati Babu, and Kalusukovalani (2002) with Srikanth and Venu Thottempudi. In Tamil, she appeared in films like Thavasi (2001) with Kamal Haasan, Kadal Pookal (2001), and her final release, Sound Party (2004), which earned her positive reviews posthumously. She also featured in Manuneedhi and *Edhi Emi Uru Raa Babu*. Known for her charming screen presence, versatility in supporting and lead roles, and ability to portray relatable characters, Pratyusha was seen as a rising star in South Indian cinema, often praised for her natural acting and beauty. Tragically, Pratyusha's life and career were cut short at the age of 20. On February 23, 2002, she died under mysterious circumstances in Hyderabad while undergoing treatment at Care Hospital. Initially reported as a suicide pact with her boyfriend and childhood love, Siddhartha Reddy (also spelled Siddardha), the couple allegedly consumed poison mixed with Coca-Cola after their marriage proposal was rejected by his family. Siddhartha survived, but Pratyusha succumbed to the effects. The case sparked widespread controversy and media attention. Her mother, Sarojini Devi, alleged it was not suicide but a murder involving rape and assault by Siddhartha and possibly others, including links to influential political figures from the then-ruling party. A forensic expert's report suggested asphyxia due to manual strangulation and traces of semen, hinting at sexual assault, but the CBI investigation concluded it was suicide, ruling out murder. In 2004, Siddhartha was convicted of abetting the suicide and attempting suicide himself, sentenced to five years' imprisonment and a ₹6,000 fine. The Andhra Pradesh High Court reduced his sentence to two years in 2011 while increasing the fine to ₹50,000. Despite the official ruling, suspicions of foul play persist, with her mother continuing to claim a cover-up. Pratyusha's untimely death remains one of the most debated tragedies in Tollywood history, highlighting issues like mental health, family pressures, and potential exploitation in the industry. Her legacy lives on through her memorable performances and the unresolved questions surrounding her demise.
