Fáfnir, name of the great dragon who was slain by Sigurd, also known as Siegfried. As told in the Völsunga saga, The greedy Fafnir killed his own father, Hreidmar, to obtain the vast amount of gold which Hreidmar had demanded of Odin for compensation for the loss of one of his sons. Odin gave the gold, but put a curse on it. Full of greed, Fáfnir changed into a Dragon to guard his treasure, but was later slain by the young hero Sigurd. This is one of the most well known stories in norse myths, so much so that the famous author, JRR tolkien, found inspiration from the story, which had an influence on the dragon Smaug and the hobbit.
