Berrilee is an adult female Gould's Long Eared Bat who somehow ended up in a fishtank on a verandah, hanging on a fake plant to keep herself above the water level. She was cold, wet and unhappy. This rescue was reported as a flying-fox pup the size of the MOP's hand; in my extensive experience I have figured out that you can never trust a MOP (member of public) with accurate observation and measurements. The lovely MOP safely fished her out and put her into a covered basket in between layers of towels. This rescue was quite a distance from me, but I had nothing specific pinning me down and since I was quite anxious that day, the thought of a flying-fox pup wet and cold and crying was too much for me; when nobody else could go I thought it would calm my anxious mind to do a defined task after which I would have a successful rescue outcome so I could get my restless mind back on track. It didn't really help in any way because instead of a flying-fox pup which I would just have absorbed into my system and network of care, I had a microbat who required a specialist carer on a day we were expecting 40 pups from a stress event arriving for triage and care and dispersal. Somehow it all worked out; Berrilee (from a suburb of far north of Sydney of which I had never heard) turned out to be a Gould's Long Eared Bat; she has gone to a specialist carer who can manage her current rehab needs; she has said our batty may be fit for a hard release next weekend. I'm not sure I'll be the one to release her. I love a happy ending even if I can't supply vid of it.
