Anxiety is common in autistic adults and many find it to be very disabling. Medications like sertraline are commonly prescribed for anxiety in autistic adults but whether they work, and what their side effects are in the autistic population is not well known. Although such medications are well studied in the non-autistic population, those research findings may not apply to autistic adults. The STRATA study aims to find out whether the medication sertraline is an effective treatment for anxiety in adults with a diagnosis of autism. The study is actively supported by the Research in Developmental Neuropsychiatry (RADiANT) network. (RADiANT focuses on 5 conditions with developmental origins- learning disability, autism, ADHD, epilepsy and brain injury. It promotes research, staff training and public education in these subject areas. The network includes over a dozen NHS Trusts from across the UK, clinical academics from universities across the world and an advisory board of experts by experience including patients, service users, family members, carers and community leaders. RADiANT is hosted by Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust).
