I simply couldn’t resist showing the incredible journey through Glencoe before arriving at the Loch. The islands of Loch Leven are uninhabited and sacred to many clans in and around the Glencoe area, most notably the Macdonalds of Glencoe, the Stewarts of Ballachulish and Appin and the Camerons of Callart, but also other clans. The largest island Eilean Munde has a cemetery, with mostly black headstones made from Ballachulish slate and it was a sacred site from the 7th century when St Fintan Munde built his wooden chapel here. This was replaced by a stone chapel in the 16th century, the remains of which are still visible today. The best known chief buried here is Alasdair MacIain, the Macdonald clan chief murdered in the Glencoe massacre of 1692. He is the chief who following William III’ s deposition of the Stuart King James VII of Scotland and II of England, reluctantly travelled to Fort William to swear fealty to the King, the deadline for which was 1st January 1692. Despite travelling through heavy snow, he made it to Fort William in time to swear the oath but was told he was in the wrong place and needed to travel to Inveraray, nearly 100 miles away, in atrocious weather conditions. He was given a letter to take with him confirming that he had arrived on time and swore the oath at Inveraray on 6th January 1692. As a result of missing the deadline, the Campbells, mostly loyal to the crown, were ordered to make an example of the Macdonalds by carrying out the massacre on 13th February 1692. The Macdonalds had recently offered the Campbell troops hospitality due to the wintry weather, but this gave the Campbells an easy opportunity to carry out the orders and 38 men, women and children were killed, many dying of exposure in the snowy Glencoe hills after fleeing the slaughter. Alasdair MacIain was killed in his chamber, one of the first to die, along with his wife. Despite their reputation for lawlessness, diplomacy was highly prized by the Macdonalds of Glencoe, who established one of the smaller islands Eilean ‘a Chomhraidh, the Isle of Discussion, as a place to settle disputes between clan members, to form agreements which were sealed at Eilean na Bainne, the Isle of Covenant, further down the Loch toward Kinlochleven. The Ballachulish Bridge crosses Loch Leven where it meets with Loch Linnhe and forms a crucial arterial road connection on the A82 to Fort William. Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the UK sits above Fort William and there is a road down Glen Nevis along the River Nevis which offers views of the Ben and other mountains in the Nevis range. On this day it was very icy with beautiful white frosted trees lining the road, but surprisingly with no snow on the mountains. This would arrive in the coming days, but unfortunately (or fortunately) not during our visit. I hope you enjoy the video.
