Praise God! Abraham’s Seed and Satan’s. Whoever commits sin- is the slave of sin. Abraham was not their father in a spiritual sense. Mere lineage, bloodline, race, relation to Abraham is not enough for salvation. They said they were children of Abraham but didn’t act like it at all. “If their origin could be wholly traced to Abraham, then their conduct would resemble his” (Dods). Jesus’ point was important: our spiritual parentage is what determines our nature and our destiny. If we are born again and have God as our Father, it will show in our nature and destiny.- Guzek They are nothing like Abraham. In fact, Jesus tells them that God is not their father- why? They would have known Him if He was. And the fact that once again they are pretty much just calling Jesus a bastard. This is insane. No, their father was Satan. A murderer, a liar, the father of lies. Like the devil they lie, they live a lie and they seek to murder the SOn of God. Also, like the devil did with Adam and Eve long ago- basically murdering them spiritually- this is also what the religious leaders have in common with their father. They are dead spiritually and they kill others spiritually whenever they can while masking it in reverence and tradition. This is why they cannot hear God’s words through Jesus. He knows He is without sin and they have no way to convict Him. Yet, Jesus knows their sin. And He knows they are not of God. I would say that this is us, too, until we surrender and believe and give ourselves over to Christ. Until then, we are not children of God. Not yet. I love Jesus. I cannot imagine NOT loving Him. Jesus again made the remarkable claim that He and His Father were so close in nature that if one truly lived as if God were their Father, they would also love Jesus. There was no room left for the person who said, “I love God but reject Jesus.”- Guzek If words mean anything, no man is really a child of God, who does not love Jesus Christ.- JC RYLE He is always telling us that good is evil and evil good – truth is falsehood and falsehood truth – the broad way good and the narrow way bad. Millions are led captive by his deceit and follow him, both rich and poor, both high and low, both learned and unlearned. Lies are his chosen weapons. By lies he slays many.- JC Ryle Before Abraham Was, I Am. They accuse Jesus of having a demon and being a Samaritan… which I would guess is a really big insult. They hated Samaritans and it really shows their ugly bigotry. They were losing the fight- people were believing Jesus, people were at least beginning to question and we wonder how many went on to belief after His death, Resurrection and Ascension? He sets them straight- not only does He not have a demon but He actually Honors His Father. He isn’t out for Himself. There is no glory for Him here. He tells them- believe and no one will die- Imagine - just believe and you will have eternal life. He then makes the claim that Abraham loved God and looked and saw the Christ with joy. ““It is interesting also that the Hebrew expression in Genesis 24:1, which stated that Abraham ‘went into the days’ (an expression translated in our Bible ‘was well-stricken in age’) was taken by some Rabbis to mean that he saw into the distant future.” (Tasker) “His time” and they make fun at His age- clearly He couldn’t know Abraham He wasn’t even old enough to retire! . Abraham is long dead. All the prophets are dead- so Jesus is clearly out of His mind. He then refers to Himself as I AM. Before father Abraham, Jesus IS. Then they tried to stone Him according to Lev. law - basically blasphemously claiming to be God. Somehow- Jesus escapes. WHY? Wasn’t the time. “Before Abraham came into existence I am, eternally existent…. No stronger affirmation of pre-existence occurs.” (Dods) There is something so overwhelming in my soul when I read the words and hear Jesus say- Before Abraham was, I AM.
