The EP What Once Was, released on November 14, 2025 by the Swedish band Fimbul Winter, represents not only an explosive debut, but a true resurrection of the primal and merciless sound that defined the early days of melodic death metal in Sweden. Formed in Tumba (near Stockholm) by three former founding members of Amon Amarth — Niko Kaukinen (drums), Anders Biazzi (guitar, ex-Hansson) and Fredrik Andersson (lead guitar, ex-drummer of Amon Amarth) —, along with vocalist Clint Williams (of Munitions and Nemesium) and bassist Linus Nirbrant, Fimbul Winter emerges as a battle cry against oblivion. The band's name evokes "Fimbulvetr," the great three-year winter that precedes Ragnarök in Norse mythology, symbolizing a brutal and inevitable prelude to chaos — and the EP masterfully captures this essence. It all started spontaneously: a gathering to play Amon Amarth's 1994 demo, The Arrival of the Fimbul Winter (recorded by Kaukinen himself over 30 years ago), during Niko's 50th birthday party. What was meant to be a nostalgic jam evolved into a serious project, driven by a shared passion for the roots of 90s Swedish death metal—think influences from Dismember, Grave, and, of course, Amon Amarth in their rawest, unpolished phase. What Once Was is a manifesto: "it's not nostalgia, it's a statement," as the band states. It reconstructs lost riffs from Amon Amarth's origins, mixed with unreleased compositions, resulting in a cold, intense, and authentic sound, without concessions to the mainstream. Independently recorded and released via Bandcamp and Profound Lore Records, the EP is a punch in the gut for those who miss the genre's golden age. With just five tracks, totaling around 20 minutes of condensed fury, What Once Was delves into themes of loss, rebirth, and the fury of Nordic nature, with lyrics that evoke eternal torments, elevated souls, and icy solitudes. The production is old-school: sharp and melodic guitars that alternate between furious blasts and epic harmonies, precise and thunderous drums, pulsating bass (highlighting Nirbrant's audible work on tracks like "In Solitude's Embrace"), and Williams' guttural vocals that inject a fresh and voracious energy. Critics and fans alike are already hailing it as "one of the most important albums in recent metal history," praising its faithfulness to its roots without sounding dated—it's as if Fimbul's winter has arrived to freeze the listeners' blood. If you love Swedish death metal in its purest and most brutal form, What Once Was is not just a recommendation: it's a summons to sonic Ragnarök. Listen on Bandcamp, Spotify, or YouTube and prepare for the impact—the Great Winter is here, and it shows no mercy. Official music video for the single "Mounds of Stones"!
