The Ten Week Rock Tumble! Was it worth it?

I decided to Rock Tumble some rough hard rocks and show how long it can take to polish really chunky stones. IT TOOK TEN WEEKS! I am sure I can polish these quicker but the finish is fantastic so I don't care! Do not let this long tumble put you off taking up this great hobby. It is my view that the instructions supplied with many rock tumblers are often way too optimistic about tumbling times. The National geographic tumblers is a good example, on the one hand they supply the minimum quantities of grit and polish but at the same time supply a mixed bag of rocks of differing hardness, some of which are very rough. Generally speaking, harder stones need more tumbling but polish better, softer stones tumble quicker but are more difficult to polish. If you want fast tumbling times and a great polish you need to choose smooth hard pebbles to start with. The best way to find smooth Agate type stones is to go rock hounding on the beach.
