We live in a world where we’re taught that having needs isn’t okay and that we should be able to handle everything ourselves. We feel less than or guilty for needing certain values, qualities, or gestures reflected back to us. We’re so terrified of what we may look like to others that we can put on a strong “shell” to mask the inner child who has needs and desires that yearn to be brought to light inside. Asking for what we need can feel extremely vulnerable in the beginning. I’ve had clients say things like “ I can’t say that!” “What will they think?” “ Am I allowed to ask for that?” Underneath this is a fear of rejection and facing uncomfortable emotions. As you learn to show up and speak up for yourself though, it feels incredibly empowering to speak to what you need while knowing the other person has a choice. You’ll often find the outcome is less relevant than the feeling of empowerment you get from finding your voice and bringing light to what you’re used to hiding.
