When we perform a breast augmentation, we make a pocket and we place an implant in that pocket. The body will naturally form a lining around that pocket and that is the body's way of walling itself off from a foreign object. This creates a chamber that the implant sits in, and as long as that chamber doesn't shrink, the breast has a nice, natural, normal feel. Occasionally, that pocket can shrink and when it does, it makes the breast feel firmer and less natural. One of the ways to help prevent that shrinkage is to recommend massage of the breast. Sometime after the operation, if the patient is healing well, we will commonly recommend that they move that implant through the pocket several times a day to keep that pocket open and prevent that contracture that will lead to a firmer, less natural feel. Now, it depends on the type of implant we put in. Patients come in and they'll ask about the so-called teardrop implant. We don't use the teardrop implant nearly as much as the smooth, round, silicon or saline implant. When a teardrop implant is placed, it has to maintain it's position. It can't change, it cannot rotate. To keep it from rotating they all have a textured surface. The reason for the textured surface is so the body can actually grow into that surface, holding it in place. When a teardrop implant is used, we don't recommend any type of massage.
