Manipur: Thousands rally in Ukhrul against border fencing, demand restoration of FMR

Over 10,000 Nagas took to the streets of Ukhrul town in Manipur on April 2 to protest against the removal of the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the ongoing border fencing along the Indo-Myanmar border, which cuts through Naga-inhabited areas. Wednesday marked the third such mass rally in Tangkhul-inhabited areas in the past six months against the Centre’s decision. Organised by the Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) along with several Tangkhul Frontal organisations under the aegis of the United Naga Council (UNC), Manipur, the rally saw the participations of MLAs Leishiyo Keishing and Khashim Vashum, leaders from UNC, Naga Hoho, Naga People’s Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) and the Global Naga Forum among several others who gathered to express solidarity towards the public movement demanding the restoration of FMR and stop the ongoing border fencing. People from various walks of life joined the rally, which began from two locations—Dungrei Junction in Hungpung and Kharasom Junction in Hunphun. The two groups later converged at Ukhrul headquarters ground for a public meeting.
