POLYMERE CLAY COIL TURTLE SWIRLS DYI FYI 2 FLY 4 FUN CRE8 CLAY COIL TECHNIQUE = POLYMER ART CRE8 CLAY COIL pots vases cups mugs plates coasters bowls designs ect... HOW 2 CRE8 COIL DESIGN BAKE Baking varies based on clay's thickness. Always place on tinfoil; carefully remove when still warm. Basically, its 225°f for 10 min. But based on thickness, I always check it, & may bake it twice to tensile it: I tensiled it by setting temp. for 225°F., then placed the vessel in the oven, as it warmed up to temp., & then baked it for 5 min. removing careful. Then re-bake for 5-10 more min. Then turn off the oven & let it cool for a few min inside oven if I want to bake a bit longer. Then remove it from the oven & let it cool. Remove from tinfoil when still warm. WARM CLAY IN HANDS Use a warm room and roll in hands to warm clay for smoother more even coils. SHAPE CLAY Shape clay around a bowl, cup, plate, ect... I also added an extra flat piece of clay to place the coils over, for added support. STICKY The clay sticks to surfaces, so use b-wipes or wax paper between clay & objects. Use b-wipe to cleans surfaces, hands, ect... It has lanolin so the wipes aid as a non- stick applicator. EXTRAS POLYMER CLAY BASICS TIPS TRICKS TECHNIQUES BAKE - 225 OVEN FOR 7 - 15 MIN. There is many opinions on how long to bake the clay but based on clays thickness; it does vary abit. You can bake hotter but clay may discolor - but will bake faster. Bake on tin foil. Ovens vary n temperature slighly Lower temperature is safer. You can re-cook/bake clay. Longer = cook/harder. Red clay cooks hotter. If it starts smelling burnt take it out/remove from oven before it starts to brown/discolor Bake 'till makes a 'klink" noise when cooled & dropped gently on glass surface - don't break it! Can re-bake if too soft. Discoloration or brown/ black coloration is over-baked clay Too thin or thick clay bakes uneven & at different durations Baked polymer clay is not hard like a rock. CLAY RULES BASICS For polymer v/s firing clay Many of the same rules apply tips tricks techniques. CONSISTENCY/ MALLEABLE Warm clay with hands by holding and working with for consultant temperature. Clay should feel like chewing gum consistency - but if it is sticky, it is too warm. Clay temp. variations will change quickly; use this to gain control. Use freezer to cool clay to 'pop out' molds. A leather like feel for rolling out and cutting out, and a chewing gum consistency for like pushing into molds and creating tie dye or modeled looks or mixing colors. AIR BUBBLES ideas to extract air bubble. Try not to open the clay up to air bubbles in the first place. Push same direction/put in pin holes to vent out air bubbles/dig out extra clay. If you still end up with a bubble after baking, press hard & hold the clay, while still hot, in the prefered shape, with a hard object until it cools - can help. BAKE varies on color & thickness. Bake on like tin foil Red bakes faster & burns easier Polymer, you can rebake Better safe then sorry - low temperature - longer. A piece 1/4" thick and 4" long is about 8-10 min @ 225 f. OR THICK CLAY 15-20 MIN just depends how hard you want the clay - if its too hard will break easier. CLEAN SURFACE COUNTER Use a clean counter to lay out out clay. Clay will stick, so check it on surface first. I keep wiping surface and press with baby wipes to keep it clean and non sticky. PASTA/CLAY/ FONDANT PRESS I use a press to run the clay through for consistent size, mine at a 7 setting, and a bit larger for flat, intricate pieces - so I ofen double up clay layers. If it is not rolling smooth; usually, thy warming and working with the clay. If clay is sticky, it is too warm. An alternative is a rolling pin. To make the clay thickness a consistent width, place something like a ruler on both sides of the clay to roll the rolling pin on top of, for height; based on the thickness of the clay that you want to achieve. If you use something like two rulers for height, make sure to secure secure them with, like tape - for example. CLEAN & COLOR SLOUGH Colors, liked red, will slough off into other colors like white. Colors like red will even rub stain off on your hands. So, always work light colors to darker colors. Keep baby wipes close to clean everything, always. Clean counters, tools, hands, ect. CLAY TECHNIQUES PRESERVE LIKE TIEDIE, PATTERNED, STRIPED, ECT If you get a great pattern, to make it last longer, I run it through the press, thin it out, and use it like a veneer on top of just a plain base piece to cover it; this technique, however, will change your original pattern but stretching it out - but your colors will go further. PLASTICS n POLYMER I would not set polymer clay on plastic surface types, or touching other clay. Polymers will react chemically with other plastics, in a negative way for the artist. THICKNESS TOO THIN OR THICK If the clay is too thin or thick, it may not bake properly or be too brittle and break.
