Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is the most serious form of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NASH is defined by the presence of the 3 following lesions in hepatocytes (specialized liver cells): steatosis, inflammation and ballooning. Inflammation and hepatocellular ballooning are commonly considered as the drivers of disease progression. Individuals with associated metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and obesity are particularly at higher risk to progress to NASH. NASH can evolve to cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma, but it is much more than just a liver disease. It also increases the risk of life-threatening cardiovascular events.
