Many organizations rely on cloud providers to reduce the compliance burden by inheriting security controls tied to operating systems and infrastructure. Using major cloud platforms can simplify authorization and certification efforts by shifting responsibility for certain controls away from the contractor. One of the most challenging CMMC requirements remains FIPS-validated cryptography under NIST SP 800-171. The difficulty is not the algorithm itself, but ensuring the cryptographic module implementing it is actively validated through the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program. Encryption in use must be tied to an approved module with a valid CMVP listing. Challenges often arise when systems rely on historical or expired validations, or when operating systems and applications outpace their certified modules. In limited cases, temporary alignment gaps may be acceptable when a validated module is still in use but does not match the exact OS version. However, using unapproved or outdated cryptographic mechanisms typically requires remediation rather than exception.
