#FromTheArchives we now take a look at a cornet used by in the Marine Band nearly 100 years ago. #NationalLibraryWeek https://www.marineband.marines.mil/ Cornetist Arthur Witcomb of Birmingham, England, joined “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in 1905. The son of a band master, Witcomb began his musical training at an early age. Prior to joining the Marine Band, he performed with the Band of the Coldstream Guards and Kilties Band in Belleville, Ontario. This gold-plated B-flat cornet was manufactured by the Martin Instrument Company and features mother of pearl buttons as well as a heavily engraved bell. A frequent soloist with the band, Witcomb played this cornet from about 1925 until his retirement in 1935. It was donated to the collection by fellow Marine Band cornetist Edward Masters.
