(9 Aug 2014) The Head of the Dutch recovery mission into the Malaysian flight 17 crash, gave a final briefing to media in Kharkiv, Ukraine on Saturday, after the mission withdrew its workers earlier in the week. "When the safety and security of my officers is at stake then there is always a reason to have a pause," said Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg. The search for the remains of victims of the disaster was halted on Wednesday by the Dutch Prime Minister after he said it was too dangerous to continue. However, Aalbersberg said he was hopeful the mission could resume some time soon. "DNA material will stay in tact for a long time so even a later search can make the difference," he said. Flight 17 was shot down in eastern Ukraine on July 17, killing all 298 people on board. In all, 228 coffins with remains have been returned to the Netherlands, but it is not known how many victims that number represents. The international team of Dutch, Australian and Malaysian recovery workers was unable to reach the site until July 31 because of fighting in the area between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russia separatist rebels. Since then, it has found remains of only a few victims, despite expectations it might find as many as 80.
