Cornwall Iron Furnace was built in 1742 by Peter Grubb and today is considered America’s only fully intact charcoal-fueled ironmaking complex. The furnace underwent extensive renovations in 1856-57 by the Coleman family, with operations closing down in 1883. The Ore Mine, which is located due south of the furnace, continued to operate under the control of Bethlehem Steel until 1973. Hurricane Agnes caused flooding of the mine, which ultimately lead to its closure. The pit mine is now a large body of water. When you visit Cornwall Furnace today you can explore the furnace, blast equipment and other related buildings that still stand as they did from over a century ago. Our Aerial PA tour will show you the Furnace, Roasting Oven and Stone Buttresses, the Abattoir (otherwise known as the smokehouse and butcher shop for the Cornwall Estate), and the Blacksmith shop and Wagon Shop. The Furnace is open to visitors Friday through Sunday, with tour times varying. https://www.cornwallironfurnace.org/ Credits: Drone Pilot/Editor/Producer: Doug Watson Graphics: Tom Downing To see more of Aerial PA, please visit • Aerial PA This series is produced for Mosaic by WITF, Central Pennsylvania’s home for curiosity.
