Thingvellir National Park - The Parliament of the Vikings, Iceland | Treasures of the World

The first settlers in Iceland's Thingvellir settled around 870 AD. In 930, the first common parliament, the Althing, convened there, laying the foundation for the Icelandic Republic. Until 1798, up to 4,000 people gathered there annually for over two weeks to settle disputes and enact laws. The chieftains, leaders of the individual settler clans, had seats and votes. Over time, however, the Althing gradually lost significance after Iceland lost its independence to Norway in the 13th century and later to Denmark. The parliament was finally dissolved in 1798. With the independence movements in 19th-century Europe, Thingvellir once again became a symbol. In 1843, Danish King Christian VIII declared by decree the re-establishment of an Icelandic parliament, but with only an advisory role. Iceland only achieved full independence in 1944 amid the turmoil of World War II, with the independence celebration taking place in Thingvellir.
