With an area of 33,327 square metres, it is located on the southern face of Mount Abantos at an altitude of 1028 metres in the Guadarrama mountain range, which gives it considerable scenic value. On 23 April 1563, the first stone was laid by order of Juan Bautista de Toledo, and after his death in 1567, Juan de Herrera took over the project. The Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2 November 1984. THE MONASTERY´S UNIQUE SPACES THE KING´S COURTYARD This was the main entrance to the building and is named after the six kings of the tribe of Judah who were chosen thanks to their participation in the construction of the Temple of Jerusalem. BASILICA Considered the nerve centre of the building, it is a masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance architecture. It is built in granite masonry and its Greek cross shape forms a square of 50 metres on each side. LIBRARY This is the place that most clearly demonstrates that the Monastery was built in honour of the Monarchy, the Faith, the sciences and the arts. The 54-metre long vault painted by Pelllegrino Tibaldi is a prominent feature of the Library, representing the seven liberal arts, theology and philosophy. PANTHEON OF KINGS Although the project of Philip II was not completed until the reign of his grandson Philip IV, the Spanish Kings since Charles V have been entombed in the Royal Pantheon, except for Philip and Ferdinand VI. THE BATTLE ROOM This is a room with enormous symbolic value and in the times of King Philip II, visitors and embassies that visited him had to pass through this great room beforehand. Con una superficie de 33.327 metros cuadrados, está situado en la ladera meridional del monte Abantos a 1028 metros de altitud en la sierra del Guadarrama. El 23 de abril de 1563 se puso la primera piedra de la construcción bajo la batuta de Juan Bautista de Toledo. Al morir éste, en 1567, Juan de Herrera se hizo cargo de la obra imprimiendo el sello arquitectónico particular del llamado estilo "herreriano". El Real Monasterio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial desde el 2 de noviembre de 1984 forma parte de la lista de Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la UNESCO. LOS ESPACIOS SINGULARES DEL MONASTERIO PATIO DE REYES Era la puerta principal del edificio y recibe este nombre porque está presidido por los seis reyes de la tribu de Judá. BASÍLICA Considerada el punto neurálgico del edificio constituye una obra maestra de la arquitectura española del Renacimiento español. Está construida en sillería de granito y su planta de cruz griega forma un cuadrado de 50 metros de lado. BIBLIOTECA Es el lugar donde mejor se comprende que el Monasterio está construido en honor a la Monarquía, a la Fe, a las ciencias y a las artes. Sobresale en la Biblioteca la bóveda de 54 metros de largo pintada por Pelllegrino Tibaldi y en la que se representan las siete artes liberales, la Teología y la Filosofía. PANTEÓN DE REYES Aunque el proyecto de Felipe II no se concluyó hasta el reinado de su nieto Felipe IV, en el Panteón Real están enterrados los Reyes Españoles desde Carlos V, exceptuando Felipe y Fernando VI. SALA DE LAS BATALLAS Es una sala con enorme valor simbólico y en tiempos del Rey Felipe II los visitantes y embajadas que le visitaban debían pasar previamente por esta gran sala.
