GROUND REPORT: “WOOD IS THE NEW GAS—AND EVEN THAT ISN’T FREE” By Saurabh Shukla The promise of modern India was simple—clean fuel, efficient kitchens, dignity in daily life. But in 2026, that promise is collapsing in real time. Across the national capital, the blue flame of LPG has quietly disappeared—replaced by thick, choking smoke rising from makeshift chulhas. This is not nostalgia. This is regression under pressure. From roadside tea vendors struggling to keep their businesses alive… to government canteens inside state assemblies… the message is consistent and deeply unsettling: The system says supply is stable. The ground says survival is broken. ⸻ VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS 🔹 ₹500/kg black market gas reality 🔹 Firewood now a priced commodity 🔹 “Delivered” cylinders that never arrived 🔹 Midnight queues vs official denial ⸻ A simple question now confronts the system: If there is no shortage—why is the capital burning wood to cook food? ⸻ [00:00] THE RETURN OF THE CHULHA In the dense, polluted lanes of NCR, efficiency has been replaced by endurance. Tea stalls that once thrived on quick service now battle slow-burning wood fires. What took minutes now stretches into hours. This is not just inconvenience—it is lost income, lost productivity, and lost dignity. “अब गैस सिलेंडर मिल नहीं रहा है और जो ब्लैक में मिल रहा है वो प्रति किलो ₹500 से ₹600 में गैस दी जा रही है” [00:31] A digital economy running on analog survival. ⸻ [01:40] THE 3 AM VIGIL The invisible cost of this crisis is time. Queues begin before sunrise—sometimes at 3 AM. Days are spent waiting. Wages are lost. Outcomes remain uncertain. The system responds not with supply—but with silence. “रात 3:00 बजे जाते हैं… चार दिन से लाइन लगा रहे हैं, अभी तक सिलेंडर नहीं मिला” [01:53] This is no longer inconvenience. This is systemic failure at the last mile. ⸻ [04:16] ASSEMBLY ON FIREWOOD The crisis is no longer confined to the margins. In Himachal Pradesh, even the Vidhan Sabha canteen has reverted to wood-fired cooking. When governance itself cannot secure basic fuel, the narrative of “adequate supply” begins to fracture. “हिमाचल विधानसभा की कैंटीन में खाना लकड़ी पर पकाया गया… विधायक भी लकड़ी पर खाना पका रहे हैं” [04:20] The gap between policy and execution is now visible—even at the top. ⸻ [06:50] THE DELIVERY SCAM A modern system introduces a modern failure. Residents receive confirmation messages: Cylinder delivered. Reality says otherwise. No cylinder. No accountability. And a lockout period that punishes the consumer for a delivery that never happened. “मैसेज आ गया कि सिलेंडर आपको डिलीवर हो गया है… और अब 25 दिन बाद आना” [07:01] Whether glitch or malpractice—the outcome is identical: The citizen pays, the system delays. ⸻ [08:42] A PLEA FROM THE GROUND The frustration is no longer contained—it is now directed. Citizens are asking policymakers to step out of controlled environments and witness reality firsthand. “जो लोग मीडिया पे बैठ के कहते हैं कोई दिक्कत नहीं… एक बार यहाँ देखें” [08:11] Because today, the divide is not ideological. It is experiential. ⸻ This is not just a fuel shortage. This is a breakdown in delivery, trust, and accountability. A nation that aimed for clean energy adoption now finds itself negotiating the price of firewood. And the most telling signal? Even the alternative is no longer affordable. ⸻ When essential supply chains begin to fracture at the bottom, the narrative at the top cannot hold for long. ⸻ Support journalism that stays on the ground, not in boardrooms.
