The My Father Le Bijou 1922, is a release that was created in honor of Don Jose "Pepin" Garcia's father who was born in 1922. The name "Le Bijou" is french for "The Jewel", made with Nicaraguan tobacco. The wrapper is a Habanos Oscuro with Nicaraguan binder and filler. It is a full body blend with rich and heavy notes of coffee coca. This vitola is the Grand Robusto with a length of 5,1/2" and a ring gauge of 55 mm. A size that is within my preferred rang of cigars. Pre-Light: I love the looks of the "triple band" combined with the "antique illustration" of the "My Father" cigar bands and placed on the dark "double oscuro" wrapper - making them stand out. A sweet coca aroma off the foot and a hit of barnyard coming off the body. A tight roll with some large visible veins and a few random spots of toothing. No resistance on the pre-draw. First: Great notes of nut and hay...with a strong dark espresso. Spice and pepper on the retro-hale. More nut flavors of almond and some coffee. Second: Great large chunks of charcoal gray ash. Notes of cinnamon, oak and coca that would come and go. Strong dark notes of espresso and coffee. Third: on the build up, notes of wood, and deep earth with a hint of coffee. Large and creamy clouds of smoke filled the air throughout the entire cigar. History: Jose Garcia was born in Cuba in the year 1950. He began working in his uncles tobacco factory at the age of 11 (1961), launching the start of his life long career in the tobacco industry. In 1963 he began working at the Felix Rodrgez export cigar factory, where he worked until he moved moved from Cuba. Jose spent 30 yrs, working and honing his skills as a "Torcedor" (a.k.a cigar roller) where he received the highest ranking level "Class 8, Master". It has also been said that " that he once rolled 320 Julietas (7" x 48) in 4 hrs. Aside of earning the Class 8 Master roller certificate, Jose Garcia also received the "Tabaquero Maestro" (Master Blender) certificate. H e even taught rolling and blending class'. Jose "Pepin" Garcia had risen to such status in Cuban, that he worked as a consultant with other cigar makers, and even worked for the best cigar manufacturers helping with the blends of Cohiba, Partagas and Montecristo. Jose "Pepin" Garcia left Cuba in 2001 ( a lot later than most of the other great cigar company owners) and ended up in Miami Florida. In 2002 he and his son Jaime Garcia and daughter Janny Garcia went into business with a man named Eduardo Fernandez, who helped "Pepin" start the "El Rey de los Habanos" factory. The ownership was split between all three Garcia's and Eduardo Fernandez. The Garcia's had to split 50% between them and Fernandez owned the other 50%. Later "Pepin" would leave and start his own company, and eventually move to Nicaragua. His company's name was "Tabacalera Cubana" (a.k.a TOCUBA for short) and it was established in Esteli, Nicaragua in 2006. The new TOCUBA factory is larger than the El Rey de los Habanos factory and employ's up to 110 rollers and is capable of putting out up to 9 million cigars per year. That is just over twice the amount, that the El Rey de los Habanos factory employs and produces. With the aid of his son Jaime Garcia and daughter Janny - the Garcia's have spearheaded the the "boutique cigar brand world". And changed the name of the company to "My Father" cigars. Pepin also had followers that wanted him to continue to produce their cigars for them, just as he did for the other company El Rey de los Habanos. One of the Garcia's first contracts aside from their own brands and sub-brands, was "Tatuaje" created by Pete Johnson. In 2010 Eduardo Fernandez had sued the Garcia's for "breach of feduciary duties, Conspiracy to commit feduciary duties and aiding and abetting breaches of feduciary duties. (not sure as to what the out come of the lawsuit was). The My Father brand and Jose Pepin as a the blender of Tatuaje, had received high rankings and accolades in "Cigar Aficionado". In 2012 My Father appeared again - this time as the number one cigar with the "Flor de las Antillas". And again in 2015 with the "Le Bijou 1922". The Garcia's have been approached many times by other companies, all wanting them to produce a cigar for them. One of those other companies was "Ashton" - who teamed up with Pepin to create the (non-Cuban) version of "San Cristabal". The Garcia's have done and accomplished a lot in such a short time compared to some of the other companies, with a history of many generations. They continue to produce cigars, and have created a loyal fan base in the process. I hope you have a chance to enjoy one! Thanks for watching! JJ [email protected]
