Victoria Park is the largest park on Hong Kong Island. Construction began in August 1954. It was the first large-scale reclamation project in Hong Kong after World War II. The park was formerly the old Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter. The materials used for reclamation were removed after the war. The building materials obtained from the damaged buildings were partially opened on May 7, 1955, and officially opened in October 1957. Victoria Park is the venue for Hong Kong’s large-scale festivals, including the annual Mid-Autumn Festival Gala, Lunar New Year Fair, and trade fairs. It is also the venue for the annual Victoria Park June 4th Candlelight Gala, and the July 1st Parade from 2003 to 2019. The starting point of the TV show, and the main venue of the Hong Kong Radio Show "City Forum". There is a bronze statue of Queen Victoria at the front entrance of the park, which was cast to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria's accession to the throne in 1897. The bronze statue of the Queen is the work of Italian sculptor Mario Lacchi. The bronze statue was originally placed in the Queen's Statue Square in Central. It was transported to Japan during the Japanese Occupation of Hong Kong to be melted as a military material. However, Japan surrendered unconditionally before it could start construction. The bronze statue escaped the fate of being melted. The bronze statue was returned to the Hong Kong government after the Second World War and was placed in the newly constructed Victoria Park on a 7-foot-high pedestal near the main entrance.
