Shapeless Figure Falls into Form by Niyayesh Bagheri

Soprano: Mackenzie Minguillo Violin: Ciara McGuire Program notes My theatrical piece, "Shapeless Figure Falls into Form," is based on a quote by Bahman Mohassess, an Iranian painter and sculptor. Each performer represents an abstract idea of a human figure. The singer is portrayed as a formless and non-dimensional creature. In some parts, she also represents the narrator of the quote. On the other hand, the violin is the form of the same creature, so it's the structure which helps the mouthless figure to be alive. Musically speaking the singer expresses the formless aspect through big jumps, silence and dissonance. The violin tries to give the figure meaning or form by playing chords, providing a sense of harmony to the piece. It forces the singer to sing lyrically by giving her loud pizzicato pitches. I have been interested in Mohasses’s work since I was 15, and I have always felt close to his art. Writing this piece gave me the opportunity to express myself through his words and one of his paintings, which was the inspiration for the theatrical aspects of the piece.
