As we continue our journey documenting the process of one of John Lobb, the world's best and most prestigous bespoke shoemakers, making a pair of shoes totally by hand, we summarize the work that has been done so far in a captivating ASMR compilation of the bespoke lastmaking process. A pair of bespoke shoes from a maker like John Lobb can take up to an entire year to make (if it isn't being filmed!) and involves the dedicated skill of multiple master craftspeople that has been developed not just over each's lifetime, but multiple generations. Bespoke shoemaking at a heritage firm like John Lobb is, after all, a tradition that has been passed down uninterrupted since the firm's founding in 1849. 1/ Bespoke Measurements The bespoke journey for any client begins with their measurements being taken. At John Lobb, the measurements are taken by hand the same way today as they have for generations. In fact, Jonathan Lobb, a fifth generation family member, uses the same measurement pad that he inherited from his father to take my measurements. The bespoke measurements are essential. It is from these measures that a skilled last makers carves, by hand, the bespoke last around which the shoe is made. The bespoke last takes into account the completely unique, individual characteristics of the clients feet to make the shoes fit perfectly. 2/ Rough Turn of the Bespoke Last The process of crafting the bespoke last begins with a "rough turn," or generic wooden last. Whereas once a lastmaker might have carved the last beginning with a literal square block of wood, today most firms begin with a larger "rough turn" that is then sculpted by the lastmaker. John Lobb is unique in that they create all of their rough turns themselves using a company they acquired many decades ago, Henry Peen. 3/ Bespoke Lastmaking Process After the "rough turn" is created by Henry Peen, the work of a bespoke lastmaker begins. Jonathan Lobb, a fifth generation Lobb family member, uses the measurements he took to turn this oversized last into a pair of individualzed bespoke lasts, each representing the unique characteristics of each foot. The process of bespoke lastmaking is both technical and artistic as the lastmaker seeks to balance two often opposing goals: that of making both a well-fitting pair and a beautiful pair of shoes. After all, bespoke clients are not after "foot shaped" shoes, but, instead a pair of shoes that are as beautiful and elegant as they are well-fitting. During the bespoke lastmaking process, the wooden last is both carved down using files and built up using pieces of hardened leather.
