Quick Tip #4: How Do You Correctly Install a V-Clamp? Most people do not think about it but v-clamps have torque specs, these specs are important because of what the band is doing, it is creating a closed system, when we look at the filter system, we see heat shields insolated elbows, insolated pipes, insolated filters and so on. When we look at the system, we can see at the v-clamp, there is no insulation as a matter of fact the v-clamps are the easiest place for us to have heat loss. The aftertreatment system must have heat to regen, if we over-torque v-clamps or under-torque them we run a risk of creating exhaust leaks. These leaks create inefficient regens, excessive regens, face plugging, and torque derate. To properly install a v-clamp you should apply a small amount of heat-rated anti-seize to the threads of the band then install the nut by hand or with a ratchet and socket making sure the v-clamp is properly seated all the way around the filter using a small rubber mallet or hammer tightening the nut to the manufacturer torque spec’s tap again then retorque. Run a regen retorque again. These are similar to a turbo clamp. If we skip these steps, what can happen? Stretched v-clamp and exhaust leaks. You’ve been watching another edition of REPs Quick Tips.
