Lake Taupo (Māori: Taupo nui a Tia) in New Zealand is the crater lake of a volcano that collapsed around 26,500 years ago and is the largest lake in the country. Lake Taupo is 40 km long, 28 km wide and extends over an area of 622 km² with a circumference of around 193 km. It is a maximum of 160 meters deep. Taupo is the seat of the Taupo District Council and lies in the southern Waikato Region. Lake Taupo is New Zealand's largest lake. In the northeast part of the lake it discharges to the Waikato River. The river flows over the spectacular Huka Falls, a short distance north of the town.
