Copyright (c) 1999 Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Many decades after notching the hosting honors in 1967, Winnipeg - as well as Canada itself - gets to stage the Pan American Games once again for the second time in its history. Running from 23 July to 8 August 1999, the Games had offered Canadians a unique "opportunity to rekindle a sense of excitement, optimism and shared vision" inspired by athletic achievement as they move towards the new millennium. The event brings together 5,000+ athletes from 42 nations in the Americas, and these Winnipeg Games had featured a total of 330 medal events in 34 sports and 42 disciplines; many of the competitions were Olympic pre-qualifying events for Sydney 2000. But, the increased pressure to succeed at any cost left numerous athletes stripped of their medals after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. Despite the occasional storms of controversy, which distracted from the field of play at the Winnipeg Pan Am Games, many Canadian athletes competed with refreshing heart and honesty with the hosts ultimately placed third overall with an astounding total of 196 medals (64 golds, 52 silvers, and 80 bronzes), finishing behind Cuba and topnotchers USA - although the final medal counts for the two aforementioned countries are disputed. Financially, this continent-wide sport fest in Winnipeg was a success, generating a surplus of $8.9 million through a combination of fiscal restraint and the contribution of nearly 20,000 volunteers. These 1999 Games have been seen by many Winnipeggers as a "chance to put their city squarely in the international spotlight", but however, the Games themselves only had mixed success, as the Pan Am Games itself - being among the then-four continental multi-sport events that accompanied alongside the Asian Games, the South Pacific Games (Oceania), and the All-Africa Games - was ranked below the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games in international sporting prestige.
