It is one of the Pancha Sabhai (5 sacred spots) where Lord Shiva graces as Nataraja, his dancing form. These 5 spots represent the 5 elements of nature or Pancha Bhoota and Chidambaram denotes the Akasha or ether or sky. The early history of this ancient temple remains hidden; however, the temple reached its present form under the Chola dynasty around the 11th century. There are five concentric Praharams or circumambulatory paths. The innermost Praharam lies within the golden roof and can only be accessed by priests. This place once was an impenetrable forest of Thillai (a kind of mangrove) trees; hence this sacred spot is also called as Thillai Nataraja temple. A Swayambhu (self-manifested) Lingam was found at the southern bank of a lotus pond amidst this dense forest. As per temple legend, Lord Shiva performed his Ananda Thandavam or cosmic dance of bliss on Thai Poosam day. The history of Chidambaram temple is also highlighted in the Skanda Purana (in Suta Samhita), one of the 18 great Puranas or sacred texts. Lord Shiva is worshipped in three forms here: as Nataraja, the dancing form of Shiva, as a crystal Lingam called Chandramouleeswara, and as formless Yantra called Akasha Lingam. The temple finds its place in many ancient Tamil texts such as Thevaram, Thirumandhiram, and in the hymns of Tamil poets – Appar, Thirugnanasambandhar, and Manickavasagar. It is said that the Shiva Ganga, the sacred water body of the temple has healing powers and has cured King Shweta Varman’s skin disease.
