Brief History of Ray Wilson’s Career Leading Up to "Alone" Ray Wilson, born on September 8, 1968, in Dumfries, Scotland, began his musical journey in the late 1980s. He first gained attention with the Edinburgh-based band Strategy before forming Guaranteed Pure in the early 1990s, releasing the album Swing Your Bag. His big break came in 1994 when he fronted Stiltskin, whose single "Inside" topped the UK charts, propelled by its use in a Levi’s commercial. This success caught the eye of Genesis founders Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford, leading Ray to join the iconic band in 1996 as Phil Collins’ replacement. With Genesis, he recorded Calling All Stations (1997), though the album’s mixed reception and poor U.S. sales led to the band’s hiatus by 1999. Post-Genesis, Ray launched his solo career and formed the band Cut_, releasing "Millionairhead" in 1999. He returned to his roots with acoustic performances, including a sold-out run at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2001. His first solo album, Change (2003), marked a shift to a more personal sound, paving the way for The Next Best Thing (2004), which featured "Alone." This period reflected Ray’s resilience and evolution as an artist after the high-profile Genesis chapter. Lesser-Known Facts About Ray Wilson Early Band Days: Ray formed his first group with his brother Steve at age 14, called The End, before moving on to bigger projects. Polish Connection: After meeting dancer Małgorzata "Gosia" Mielech in 2007, Ray relocated to Poznań, Poland, in 2008, where he wrote the song "Not Long 'Til Springtime" for her. Trance Remixes: DJ Armin van Buuren remixed two of Ray’s "Millionairhead" tracks—"Another Day" (as "Yet Another Day") and "Gypsy"—showcasing his versatility beyond rock.
